Choosing the right secondary spill containment system

New Pig secondary spill containment systems are procured by purchasing agents, maintenance supervisors, safety and environmental managers, safety directors, spill responders, and plant engineers for a number of different industries, including metalworking, chemical, automotive, printing, utilities, food, construction, institutions, municipalities and government. Because of the varied needs of these industries, there are many secondary containment types to choose from. Determining the best fit for your spill containment equipment begins with collecting hazard identification information, including:
- Types of harzardous waste frequently stored in or transported through a particular area.
- Locations where oil is stored in large quantities and modes of transportation
to move it.
- Extreme weather conditions that might occur in the area.
- The proximity of response teams trained to respond to the spill.
New Pig's technical service advisors are available from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm EST to help you select the secondary containment tanks that make sense for you. For more information, click here or call 1-800-HOT-HOGS® (468-4647) now!
Choosing secondary containment systems is easy with the number of choices New Pig offers you. Start by determining how many drums you’ll need to store at any particular time, and what type of liquid you’ll be protecting from a spill. A sampling of New Pig’s wide variety of secondary containment options include:
Poly Containment Pallets
New Pig offers secondary spill containment pallets for the safe and compliant storage of drums in a variety of styles, including 2- and 4-Drum Poly Spill Containment Pallets available in Standard Duty or Heavy Duty Low Profile, and a 4-Drum Poly Spill Containment Pallet Steel Loading Ramp for easily getting your drums onto the spill pallets.
Collapse-a-tainer® Containment System
For hassle-free drive through containment, check out our
Collapse-a-tainer® line where you’ll find a number of portable, economical, high-volume containment systems. We also have 3- and 1- drum pallets.
Pop-up Pools
For portable "stow & go" spill containment for vehicles and quick deployment in emergency situations, stop by our Pop-up Pools page. There’s a variety of sizes available for catching the contents of blown hydraulic lines or leaking containers, or to catch liquids after decontaminating spill responders.
Poly Roll Top Pallets
Poly Roll Rop Pallets offer a clean and efficient way of storing secondary containment tanks indoors or outdoors. Choose from 2-Drum and 4-Drum Roll Top Hardcover; 1-, 2-, and 4-Drum Poly Drip Decks, and more.
Steel Containment Decks
Choose from 1-, 2-, and 4-Drum Steel Modular Spill Decks for areas where durability is an issue.
Steel Containment Pallets

What liquids will your spill containment equipment be absorbing?
Choosing secondary containment systems with absorbents designed to absorb both water and oil-based liquids when responding to an oil spill on water can be a costly mistake. Likewise, having a secondary containment chemical spill system available with limited compatibility when responding to a highly corrosive liquid may result in an undesirable chemical reaction. Start by knowing what liquids are used in your facility and you will be able to select the correct spill containment equipment to meet your needs.
What is the worst-case scenario your secondary containment system will likely face?
This involves determining the largest amount of liquid that could be spilled from a single container or holding tank. If your liquids are stored in drums, this would likely be the content of an entire drum, normally either 30 or 55 gallons. If you store liquid in totes, consider the volume of your largest tote - usually anywhere from 200 to 500 gallons.
Remember that it may not always be practical to expect secondary spill containment equipment to absorb the entire contents of a spill, especially if it is a large one. Spill containment equipment can be used in conjunction with non-absorbent dikes and drain covers, like our SPILLBLOCKER® Dike and DRAINBLOCKER® Drain Covers, which help channel or contain liquids so that they can be recovered with vacuums or pumps. After a bulk of the liquid has been removed, absorbents can then be used to remove the remainder of the spill.
